Attribution Theory: Why We Explain Behavior the Way We Do

Fritz Heider first proposed that people act like "intuitive scientists," constantly explaining others' behavior by attributing it to one of two sources:

  • Internal (dispositional) attribution: explaining behavior by the person's traits, personality, or intentions ("she's late because she's inconsiderate").
  • External (situational) attribution: explaining behavior by the circumstances ("she's late because of traffic").

Harold Kelley extended this into the covariation model, which says we use three types of information to decide which attribution fits:

  2. Distinctiveness — does this person behave differently in other situations? (Is she usually on time everywhere else?)
  3. Consistency — does this person behave the same way every time in this situation? (Is she always late to meet you specifically?)

High consensus + high distinctiveness + high consistency points to an external (situational) attribution. Low consensus + low distinctiveness + high consistency points to an internal (dispositional) attribution — this is a genuinely testable exam question, so it's worth working through a couple of examples until the pattern clicks.

The Fundamental Attribution Error

Here's the twist: even with all this information, humans are systematically biased toward one type of explanation. The fundamental attribution error (FAE) is the tendency to overestimate the role of a person's disposition and underestimate the role of the situation when explaining other people's behavior. If a classmate snaps at you, your default assumption is "they're rude," not "they might be exhausted or stressed."

This bias flips when we explain our own behavior — a pattern called the actor-observer bias. When you snap at someone, you're quick to cite the situation ("I'm just exhausted today") but quick to blame others' dispositions for the same behavior. A closely related bias, the self-serving bias, shows up specifically around outcomes: we attribute our successes to ourselves ("I aced the exam because I'm smart") and our failures to the situation ("I failed because the exam was unfair").

Lee Ross's classic 1977 quiz-show study demonstrated the FAE directly: participants were randomly assigned to be "questioners" (who wrote hard trivia questions from their own knowledge) or "contestants" (who tried to answer them). Even though observers knew the questioner had a built-in advantage of choosing questions from their own expertise, they still rated the questioner as more generally knowledgeable than the contestant — attributing the questioner's apparent brilliance to disposition rather than to the obviously stacked situation.

Schemas and the Shortcuts That Save Mental Effort

We can't consciously analyze every piece of information about every person we meet — there just isn't enough mental bandwidth. So the brain relies on schemas: mental frameworks built from past experience that let us make fast predictions about people and situations. A schema for "professor" might include assumptions about intelligence, formality, and age. Schemas are efficient, but they also filter what we notice (we tend to notice schema-confirming information and overlook schema-contradicting information) and can calcify into stereotypes when applied rigidly to entire social groups.

Related cognitive biases compound the problem:

  • Confirmation bias — actively seeking and remembering information that supports what we already believe about someone, while discounting contradicting evidence.
  • Halo effect — assuming that one positive trait (e.g., physical attractiveness) implies other unrelated positive traits (e.g., intelligence, kindness).
  • Primacy effect — first impressions carry disproportionate weight in shaping our overall judgment of someone, because early information sets the schema through which we interpret everything after it.

Why This Isn't Just Abstract Theory

These aren't lab curiosities. Interview panels rate the same résumé more favorably when attached to an attractive photo (halo effect). Judges and juries are more likely to attribute a defendant's crime to bad character (dispositional) rather than poverty or circumstance (situational) when the defendant is a stranger — but the same jurors are more forgiving of situational excuses for people they identify with. Teachers who form an early impression of a "difficult" student may then selectively notice behavior that confirms it and overlook the same behavior in other students — a documented contributor to real classroom inequities.
