How Social Psychologists Find Things Out

The Stanford Prison Experiment (1971). Philip Zimbardo assigned college-student volunteers to play "guards" or "prisoners" in a simulated prison in a Stanford basement. Within days, guards became abusive and prisoners showed severe emotional distress, and the two-week study was shut down after only six days. Zimbardo argued this showed how quickly ordinary people internalize assigned social roles and how institutional settings can produce cruelty independent of anyone's individual character.
